Johan Claeys studied archaeology at the University of Leuven in 1998-2002 and subsequently specialized in Eastern Mediterranean Archaeology (EMA) in 2003-2004. Since 2001 he has been participating in the annual campaigns of the Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project (SARP), as supervisor of the ongoing excavations of the Roman Baths. However, his main focus since 2004 has been directed towards archaeological research in The Netherlands, with additional side projects in Ireland and Bolivia. At a strictly voluntary level he has been involved in the archaeological weblog ArcheoNet Vlaanderen since its launching in early 2005. He joined the SARP-team fulltime as a PhD student in February 2011, with the Eastern Suburbs of the city of Sagalassos as his study object.
